What We Do

The Ascension Island Government provides a wide range of services to all those living and working on the island. Here is a brief description of the main services:

Postal Services

The Post Office, located in Georgetown, provides mail services for Ascension Island as well as offering a vast array of Philatelic items for sale from the three islands of St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha.

Police

The Ascension Island detachment of the St Helena police force, with jurisdiction throughout the island. The detachment is funded by the Ascension Island Government.

Judicial Services

Provision of judicial services through the Magistrates', Supreme and Coroner's Court on Ascension, supported by Crown Counsel and the Clerk to the Courts.

Fire and Sea Rescue

The Fire & Sea Rescue Services are responsible for fire fighting, prevention and rescue services on land and inshore waters.

School

The School, situated in Two Boats, broadly follows the National Curriculum (England) and at the end of year 11 children take IGCSE or GCSE exams. There are approximately 105 pupils on roll between the ages of 3 and 16. Class sizes are small with between 6 and 15 in a year group.

Health Services

The hospital provides healthcare with surgical capability for all on Ascension. There are daily outpatient clinics including midwifery services. There is a well equipped Dental Clinic which provides all routine treatment. Environmental Health is responsible for pest control, household waste including hospital hazardous waste and management of the refuse tip.

Marine, Plant & Transport Services

Responsible for off-loading the supply ships that service the island and operates to ISPS (International Ship and Port Facility Security Code). It includes maintenance of the moorings and a wide range of maintenance to vehicles, plant and equipment.

Facilities Management

Facilities Management is responsible for buildings and infrastructure upkeep including roads, sewerage, grounds and playgrounds maintenance.

Conservation

Corporate Services

The Corporate Services Team provides a range of administrative services to the organization and supports the Administrator in his administrative day to day role and statutory functions which include Immigration, Registration of Births, Marriages and Deaths, Currency Officer for St Helena, Harbour Master, Receiver of Wrecks, Chair of the Island Council, and head of the public service. The team also provides support to the elected Island Council as well as Human Resources advice and management. Legal advice is provided to government and the Island Council by a Crown Counsel who is part of the Attorney General's Chambers in St Helena.

Finance

The Finance Team is responsible for planning, monitoring and developing local government finance. This includes managing income tax, property tax and customs duties. Insurance agency, procurement, port and shipping and passenger/flight booking services are provided also.
