Key Stage 1 and 2
The Primary school is a bright and airy place to be, the climate means we have open courtyard areas between classes and most rooms are located off the large school hall. Most classrooms are quite large considering class size and well equipped with interactive white boards and up to date resources.
There are 3 classes in the Primary school, classes can vary considerably between 10 and 24 children. Lower School consists of Year 1 and 2, Middle One is Year 3 and 4, Middle Two has Year 5 and 6. Each class has a class teacher and there is a teaching assistant who supports various groups.
We operate a rotational system in our timetable so that each teacher has a specialism and takes the groups for their subject. We have access to an ICT suite with assistant teacher, withdrawal or small group rooms and of course the senior school shares the same site, so when we want to use home economics or science labs we have these facilities too.
Our curriculum has been adapted form QCA units of study, we use the Ruth Miskin Literacy synthetic phonics programme to introduce the children to literacy and reading. This has been extremely successful in helping the children with their understanding of sounds and working in small streamed groups over the past few years.
Parents, helpers and visitors are welcomed into the school and play an important part of our day. Either attending assemblies or volunteering to sort materials and hear children read.
We believe the primary school is great place to further the education of all children who pass through the island and we promise to fill their days with memorable, happy learning experiences!
Key Stage 3
We have excellent facilities with an experienced staff from St Helena and the UK. At Key Stage 3 we follow the National Curriculum for England with some local modifications. We offer a broad range of subjects covering all the essential elements of the curriculum that would be expected in a school in the UK.
Key Stage 4
At Key Stage 4 students follow a number of core subjects which include English, Maths and Science all of which lead to the award of IGCSE or GCSE. For a small, relatively isolated school we offer a range of subjects delivered by well qualified, experienced staff who set the students challenging targets and encourage them to aspire to be the best they can.
