Fire Department: Fire & Sea
Rescue Service
The Ascension Island Government Fire & Sea
Rescue Service first started to operate as an independent service
in 2001. During this time additional equipment and manning
resources have been accumulated to further promote fire safety
awareness through training and open days.
The
Ascension Island Government Fire Department.
The service has an inshore lifeboat
for sea rescue purposes which was brought into operation
at the beginning of 2004. This additional service has developed
well and has proved its worth on several occasions in assisting
local fishing vessels reporting engine failures etc. whilst
at sea.
Fire & Sea
Rescue Service Life Boat
The Fire and Sea Rescue Services consists of four full-time
and five retained members of staff.
The retained members mostly cover for lifeboat duties but
also partake in fire-fighting training, this allows cover
for leave/sickness etc. for the full time staff as required.
Apart from operational duties we also have our scheduled
routine tasks which are carried out on a daily, weekly and
monthly basis, for example we provide training to other organisations
including fire extinguisher use, fire prevention etc. we
also service first aid fire-fighting appliances for various
clubs and private businesses on the island along with relevant
advice on fire safety issues.
Although the Service can still be described as being in
the early stages it is hoped that through further development
and commitment the service will continue to grow.
