THE ADMINISTRATOR

Mr Colin Wells was sworn in as Administrator of Ascension Island on 27 October 2011 in the presence of members of the Island Council.

Colin Wells is 44 and has been a career member of HM Diplomatic Service since 1987. His overseas postings have included Bridgetown (Barbados), The UK Mission to the UN in Geneva, Abuja (Nigeria), Baku (Azerbaijan), Khartoum (The Sudan) and immediately before his arrival in Ascension, he was the Head of the British Embassy Office in Abidjan, Cote d’Ivoire. 

Colin has three children (two daughters and a son) who are based in the United Kingdom but will be regular visitors to the Island during university breaks and school holidays. His eldest daughter, Gracie, is 18 and attends Leeds University. Jade is 16 and attends Rugeley Priority Horizon School in Staffordshire. Sam, Colin’s only son, is 14 and attends Blessed Robert Sutton School in Burton-upon-Trent.

The Administrator of Ascension Island is appointed by the Governor of St Helena, Ascension Island and Tristan da Cunha, and represents the Governor and the British Government on the Island. The Governor, His Excellency Mark Capes, is based on St Helena.  The Administrator also heads the Ascension Island Government.

The Administrator lives at The Residency, a former hospital for sailors built in 1867, located half-way up Green Mountain. The Administrator’s Office is located in the Ascension Island Government’s Administration Building in Georgetown.
